Virender Sehwag Talks about Sehwag International School

Virender Sehwag talks to NDTV about Sehwag International School and his journey from childhood to the current days. He goes down memory lane about when did he start playing, and what made him start this School. He also talks about the IPL season and his current cricketing career.

12-year-old Naresh Babu stood quietly at the reception area. It was his first day at the Sehwag International School (SIS) — owned, conceptualized and run by cricketer Virender Sehwag. And the presence of the former Indian opener at the premises made it quite an experience for Naresh and his father, both of whom had travelled from Patna.

Sehwag shook hands with them, and the office boy quietly passed on a miniature bat signed by the cricketer to Naresh. It was the youngster’s induction at the Sehwag’s education institute, a 23-acre property in Jhajjar, Haryana.

Viru, who was recently sold to Kings XI Punjab for `3. 2 crore at IPL 2014 auctions, is known as ‘sir’ here, a role he has quickly adopted, overseeing every detail with elan.

“Every student, irrespective of caste, creed, color or religion is welcome here,” says Sehwag, who visits the school at least once a week, to nurture his dream of turning the school into a successful endeavor.

In fact, this dream is that of his father, Krishan Sehwag. “When I was a kid, I spent time travelling the entire day by bus and my father would say, ‘you waste so much time in travelling. I wish we had a place where you could stay, study and play at the same time.’ When I was successful as a cricketer, he asked if I would now be able to provide children with such a facility,” he recalls.

Sehwag turned that dream into a reality when he was gifted land by Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and started SIS in 2011. In its fourth year, the institute has close to 390 students and over 35 faculty members.

Learn from experience

Unconventional has always been Sehwag’s middle name, and his interactions with students, whether in the classroom or in the sports field, stresses of learning more from experience than text books. “What extra can you learn from a book? You can learn what is written, but experience teaches you far more. If you are ever involved in a crisis, no book can tell you what to do. It is what you learn from it, that shapes your identity and character,” he explains and adds carefully. “I don’t want to preach to the kids. I want the children to be responsible themselves and take their own decisions.”

Elaborating further, he says, “I never tell them what to do. I share and motivate.” Wife Aarti is the chairperson and takes care of the finer details of the school like the menu for students for all meals or the activity chart that includes blindfold games, movies, pool parties, football, handwriting contests, nature walks — the aim is clearly towards overall development and not just academics.

SIS principal Singh Dhirendra Singh narrates an interesting story about the veteran cricketer. “One day Viru told us how he was rejected twice during the Under-19 trials and would not go to the trial the third time. ‘Six balls is all I get’, he told his coach, who was forcing him to try again. The coach said, ‘Viru, at least you have those six balls, what are you afraid of?’

This time, Viru slammed six sixes in that one over and the rest, as they say, is history. He is an inspiration and students and parents take pride in being associated with this school,” Singh says.
Sehwag spends time with students, but the dashing batsman is sometimes left stumped when they ask him difficult questions. “They can ask anything. One day they asked me about match-fixing, sometimes they want to know about my game,” the cricketer says.

Asked if he was a naughty child, Sehwag chuckles, “There are a lot of stories about me. I must’ve been up to something since my coaches had to tie a rope to my leg while I batted! I excelled at sports. Also I never failed in academics. It didn’t matter, whether I scored 90 marks or 50!” he winks.

Creativity as a subject

One of the most important subjects that Sehwag is contemplating is to introduce creativity at his institution. And the inspirations are his young sons, Aryavir and Vedhant.

“My kids are very creative. They do amazing things… sometimes they dress up like Hanuman or Arjun. They become mythological characters but then they give it a modern twist. If I ask them to narrate Romeo and Juliet, they present the story and characters in such a different manner!,” he exclaims.

He adds, “Their ideas are so modern. There is no end to creativity and we need to cultivate it. Creativity needs to be nurtured.”

Sehwag’s vision with SIS is to provide the future generation a place for all-round development. “I have had a successful cricketing career, and if this can turn out to be same, there’s nothing more than I can ask for,” he concludes.

Republic Day Celebrations at SIS

Nationalistic and Patriotic feeling was in the air as Sehwag International School celebrated Republic Day on 26th of January. The event was marked with hoisting of Tricolor in the front lawn of the school by the Principal. March Past was led by Abhishek Rathee and supervised by Mr. Gaurav Bisht. The day was filled to brim with joy instilled through patriotic songs, award ceremonies and distribution of sweets.

Sharjah Education Show from Jan 29

   60 exhibitors to take part in Great India Education Fair to be held alongside the show

SHARJAH-Strong growth in higher education will continue to provide students with a bigger choice of courses every year. A prominent fixture on the UAE's education calendar, the International Education Show(IES) in Sharjah will field a larger delegation of universities and school this year.

 Hosted at the Sharjah Expo Centre from January 29 to February 1, the four-day show has registered a 31 per cent rise in the number of exhibitor with nearly 150 institutions signing up for the event.

An additional 60 exhibitors from India will also be taking part in the Great India Education Fair which is being held for the second consecutive year featuring international boarding schools, universities and colleges from India.

With the UAE Cabinet approving 21 per cent of its total budget allocation of DH46 billion for the education sector in 2014, it becomes a continuing trend where the government is placing high importance on the sector, thus boosting demand for higher education.

The Show timing will be from 9am to 2pm and 4pm to 8pm from January 29 to 30. On January 31 and February 1, the show will run from 4pm to 8pm .
The exclusive timing for girls will be on January 29, from 9am to 2pm; and exclusive timing for boys will be on January 30, from 9am to 2pm. 

"Though we have good local and international institutions in the country and can lay claim to the status of an emerging educational hub, we have to admit that huge gaps exist between workforce supply and demand in a number of industries. Through the high budgetary allocations and proactive strategies implemented by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the UAE government is aiming to plug these gaps," said Saif Mohammed Al Midfa, CEO, Sharjah Expo Centre.

" We are also likely to see more educational institutios coming to the UAE and the existing ones increasing their programmes to meet the rising requirements. The International Education Show will be a dedicated platform for local and International institutions to target the ambitious student population in the region," added Al Midfa.

Asians constitute the largest student community in the UAE and the Great India Education FAir, India's most popular education event, will target the expat population. The fair will also help parents interact directly with principals from some of India's top boarding schools which are offering spot admissions from Grade 2 onwards.

Sehwag Launches School in Capital

Patna: Sehwag International School ( SIS), managed by Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, will apprise parents of its facilities at a mega admission fair, the Premier Schools' Exhibition here on December 14 and 15.

Speaking about the Haryana- based SIS's presence in Patna. Sehwag said. ‘To me, this is an exciting stride forward. Its activities and campus is a realisation of a situation I wanted to live in during my evolving years."

“Being a sportsperson, I understand that true lessons of life are often learnt outside classrooms. At SIS, we try to incorporate indoor and outdoor training to mould students to think critically, synthesize knowledge and reflect on their thought processes.” he added.

Distinguishing Features of a Dream Project by India’s only Cricketer to start a School with International Standards

Striking a balance between academics and the sport one plays has always been a conundrum and a tough struggle in the formative years of any cricketing legend. Virender Sehwag, the dashing Indian opener, also faced this dilemma as a child, but he was determined to offer an educational institution that ensures a practical solution to the issue for generations to come!

So, what all have prompted the couple to start the school? What are Virender Sehwag’s viewpoints about education, especially of a futuristic world? What are the broader and finer points that make SIS stand a class apart vis-a-vis other top schools? How is he (along with Mrs Sehwag) planning to take the mission forward? All this, we’re sure, could be unexplored areas for the media in India and outside.

As a child, he wanted to don the India colours and wield the willow to slaughter the fearsome bowling attack anywhere in the world. But Virender Sehwag, the swashbuckling India opener, never forgot for a moment his parental advice not to ignore education.

That was easier said than done, though. The young Sehwag always found it tough shuttling between home and school, especially grappling with the sheer wastage of time while trying to balance academics with his favourite game.

True, his home and school in the 1990s weren’t far apart; both were in Najafgarh, then a dusty, underdeveloped colony in southwest Delhi. “But on crowded buses, it isn’t easy to carry your heavy cricket kit in your hand and an equally heavy school bag slung across your shoulders. The conductor needn’t be kind; you end up wasting hours in transit between school, coaching centre and home,” notes Sehwag, whose batting prowess has scripted many an international record.

“I thought of a solution to it: why not set up a world class school where education and top-rate sports facilities will blend seamlessly?’’

The result is Sehwag International School (SIS), a 23-acre multi-activity campus in Jhajjar, just south of plush Gurgaon in Haryana. Into its third year, the school is bracing up to take in no less than 250 students in the upcoming academic year.

SIS, for the record, is India’s only school to be founded by a cricketer of global repute. A co-ed, boarding-cum-day school with 370 students, it is the realisation of an ideal situation Sehwag had cherished during his evolving years.

“Good schooling is a must even with your passion for sports,” notes the Nawab of Najafgarh, who started SIS in 2011 along with his wife Aarti Sehwag, its chairperson. “My aim is to give the young generation all necessary facilities under one roof. An institution where the parental care won’t be missing -- with a band of affectionate teachers available round the clock for boarders! A home away from home!”

Creditably, SIS, which follows CBSE syllabus and is poised to teach its first class X batch in 2014-15, accommodates day scholars along with boarders. “I want to ensure that my endeavour also benefits people of my own native land. Their children can go back home every day; the expense is thus less,” says Sehwag, whose parents hail from Chudani village which is close to Bahadurgarh in pastoral Jhajjar district.

Celebrity cricketers are all praise for Sehwag and his unique endeavour.

Sachin Tendulkar says SIS venture makes him proud to be associated with Sehwag. “It’s a great job. I wish Viru all success,” adds the master-blaster who has partnered with Sehwag in running SportsMentor Pvt Ltd, which is a pioneer in providing an internationally-accredited scientific sports education programme for schoolchildren in India.

Former captain Sourav Ganguly notes that it rarely happens that a successful cricketer invests in education when there are more lucrative ventures around. “I’m proud of him,” adds the southpaw.

Hyderabadi great V V S Laxman, who has visited SIS, is particularly impressed with the school’s cricket stadium built as per BCCI stipulations. “The ground is big-size; the facilities are state-of-the-art,” he gushes. “Overall, it’s a good blend of co-curricular activities.”

In fact, besides the cricket ground, the SIS campus has high-standard facilities for athletics, basketball, badminton, equestrian, football, lawn tennis, table tennis, squash and a swimming pool.

Besides nine full-time coaches, the school has highly-qualified teachers who also take care of boarders (boys, for now) in spacious, air-conditioned, four-bedded rooms — each bathroom-attached). “We strive to make them responsible citizens by instilling in them the need to work for society rather than scripting just individual success stories,” says Sehwag, the only Indian to be honoured as the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World for his performance in 2008, and next year becoming the first player of any nationality to retain the award.

The Sehwags have two children, and is keen to admit them to SIS. “Aryavir is in class 1; the younger one is in a playschool. “From their class 3, both will be in SIS,” avers Delhi-raised Aarti.
